Brotherly Love as a yearling at Tweenhills
Love to see Tweenhills-born Listed winner
Brotherly Love, who like his half-brother Heart of Honor was born, raised and grazed at Tweenhills, took another step forward when winning the Listed Dubai Road To The Kentucky Derby at Meydan on Friday.
Brotherly Love and Heart of Honor are both out of Ruby Love, a champion 2yo turf filly in Chile who was bought by David Redvers for $90,0000 at the 2021 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. It turned out to be a very shrewd purchase.
Heart of Honor was sold as a foal by Tweenhills and ended up being purchased by his current connections – trainer Jamie Osborne and owners Jim And Claire Limited – for €160,000. Brotherly Love was even better buy at just 40,000gns from Tweenhills as a yearling.
Brotherly Love is by Zoustar so was also conceived at Tweenhills. Ruby Love also had a Kameko colt in 2025 but sadly passed away – such a loss as she was clearly a special producer.
Despite drama at the start when a rival broke through the stalls and had to be caught, and Brotherly Love being caught in the kickback in rear for most of the way, he did a perfect impression of Heart of Honor as he found lots for pressure to win by 2 lengths.
It was the same dirt race in which Heart of Honor had been beaten a head last year, helping banish that memory for jockey Saffie Osborne who said: "I thought Brotherly Love was easier to ride than Heart of Honor but, just like Heart of Honor, he has just got progressively more lazy.
"His demeanor in the races is making life quite difficult for me. Just like his brother, once I really started getting into him, he found another gear and he just stays all day, this horse. This family obviously has a lot of class."
The 9.5f race was formerly known as the Al Bastakiya Stakes and the next logical step would be the Gr.2 UAE Derby – in which Heart of Honor was beaten a nose – over the same C&D on March 28, which is virtually a "win and you're in" for the Gr.1 Kentucky Derby.
Should Brotherly Love contest a US classic he will be following in the hoofprints of Heart of Honor, who finished fifth in the Preakness Stakes and sixth in the Belmont Stakes, both Gr.1s.
Heart of Honor won a Listed race at Meydan – over the same C&D as Brotherly Love’s latest success – in December and was third in the Gr.1 Al Maktoum Challenge last time.
