Runman matches brother with Newbury win
Just over 24hrs after King High won a 2yo 1m maiden at Newbury on Thursday, his half-brother Runman won a 3yo 10f handicap at the track on Friday. Both colts were born, raised and grazed at Tweenhills out of mare Bella Nouf.
Runman had won his first 2 starts – inc. a smooth defeat of St Anton, now OR 97 – and had shaped much better than the result from a poor track position in the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot.
He lined up against three rivals on Saturday, trying a new trip but bred for it, and showed a fantastic attitude to wear down Wild Thoughts and win by a length. Runman won off OR 90 and pushed his Timeform rating to 99.
He could now look to get black type in something like the Gr.3 Winter Hill Stakes at Windsor on Sep 7 or minor Stakes races abroad. He’s trained by John and Thady Gosden and has been ridden to his 3 wins by Oisin Murphy and William Buick.
Runman’s most famous sibling is the same stable’s Gr.2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes heroine Running Lion (by our late sire Roaring Lion) but Bella Nouf has also produced Gr.3 2yo winner Majestic Glory (a full sister top Runman, by Frankel), King High and another winner, Cozone.
Like Running Lion, Runman carries the colours of David Howden, who bred him with Tweenhills’ owner David Redvers.
