Gold and Spear colts in Derby

Tweenhills stallions Havana Gold and Lightning Spear both have colts entered in the 2023 Derby.

Havana Gold is represented by the Sir Mark Prescott-trained 2-year-old Dark Gold. He cost Oliver St Lawrence 85,000gns at the Tattersalls October Book 2 Yearling Sale from Selwood Bloodstock.

Selwood Bloodstock bought his dam Muscovado (by Mr Greeley) from Tweenhills for just 3,500gns at the 2018 Tattersalls December Mare Sale. She’s also the dam of another Havana Gold colt, Golden Syrup, who has won four times for Godolphin in Japan.

Havana Gold was the leading UK-based sire of 2-year-olds in Europe in 2021 with 32 individual winners, ahead of Dubawi and Showcasing etc.

Lightning Spear’s Derby entry is Samagon, out of Mujahid mare Velvet Revolver. He was bred by Christopher Wright’s Stratford Place Stud and bought from them for £50,000 by Sackville Donald at the Goffs UK Premier & Silver Sale. Velvet Revolver is also the dam of Stakes-winning sprinters Ken Colt and Acapulco Gold.

Samagon is among the first crop of runners for Lightning Spear. This year also sees the first Northern Hemisphere-bred 2-year-olds by Zoustar and the only crop left behind by champion Roaring Lion.
