Impressive novice winner for Havana Gold
A son of Havana Gold made a deep impression on Thursday evening when San Carlos won the British EBF Novice Median Auction Stakes over seven furlongs at Chelmsford.
Sent off a strongly-backed 13/8 favourite after finishing mid-field over six furlongs at Kempton on his debut 15 days earlier, San Carlos lined up against 12 rivals at the Essex track.
Thought he dived right leaving the stalls, San Carlos looked straightforward in the race as he tracked front runner and eventual runner-up Just Later until hitting the front inside the final furlong.
San Carlos picked up well for a tap of the whip from Liam Jones and hit the line with three and a quarter lengths to spare. The colt gave trainer Shaun Keightley his first two-year-old winner since he returned to the training ranks in April.
San Carlos is owned by Mrs Chantal Regalado-Gonzalez, whose Qualify caused a major upset when winning the 2015 Oaks at 50/1.
San Carlos was bred by Hall Of Fame Stud Ltd out of Any Given Saturday mare Ittasal. He has been sold three times at public auction, most recently for £30,000 (which now looks a bargain) at the Goffs UK Breeze-Up Sale in April. Ittasal made a winning juvenile debut in 2011.
