Lightning filly strikes for eighth time
When owner-breeder Susie Hartley made the decision to send her winning Epaulette mare Velvet Morn to Lightning Spear she surely didn’t dream that the resulting offspring would be so successful.
Their daughter Royal Velvet won her eighth race from 20 starts on Thursday and is now Timeform-rated 106. She has been a marvellous advert for Lightning Spear as a stallion – he represents amazing value at just £3,000 (Oct 1st SLF) this year – and for Susie’s nous as a breeder.
Incredibly, Royal Velvet isn’t the only prolific winner by Lightning Spear trained by William Knight as Atlantic Gamble has won six times for the trainer.
Velvet Morn’s handicap win came off 60 but her daughter, Royal Velvet, won off 91 on Thursday, her second victory over 7f on the Rowley Course at Newmarket (she’s also won on the July Course) and her third win in the hands of William Buick.
Royal Velvet looks more than capable of getting black type as a 5yo and will make a wonderful broodmare for her owner-breeder when the time comes.
