Lightning Spear winner doubles up
David Simcock trained Lightning Spear to win multiple big races and struck again with his son Charlie’s Choice at Kempton on Wednesday afternoon. The 4yo was born, raised, and grazed at Tweenhills.
Charlie’s Choice had won a 9.5f Wolverhampton handicap on Jan 7 and was sent off favourite to repeat the feat against 11 rivals over 11f at Kempton. Again ridden by Callum Shepherd, the son of Lightning Spear proved much too good for the opposition, winning by 2½ lengths.
Charlie’s Choice raced smoothly in mid-field and quickened to lead 1f out. He will be a short price to complete the hat-trick for David Simcock and owner The Future.
Iffraaj mare Aliyana was purchased by Blandford Bloodstock for €8,000 at the 2019 Arqana Deauville February Sale and sent straight to Lightning Spear at Tweenhills. Her first foal was Charlie’s Choice, bred by Tick Tock Partnership.
Aliyana’s second foal was also by Lightning Spear and looks a winner in waiting: 3yo Lucy Lockett who was a close second in a 7f nursery when last seen in September for the same connections as Charlie’s Choice.
Aliyana remains at Tweenhills and has a 2yo by Lightning Spear also in training with David Simcock. She has a filly yearling by Lighting Spear and is due a foal by him in April.
