Velvet secures sixth smooth success for Spear

Lightning Spear’s stunning daughter Royal Velvet recorded an incredible sixth win on July 12 when landing a 0-100 handicap at Newmarket for trainer William Knight, jockey William Buick and owner-breeder Mrs Susie Hartley.

Royal Velvet has been an amazing advertisement for Lightning Spear as a stallion. Her will to win has seen her first past the post on six of her 16 starts, a fantastic return for a filly who started her racing career as a 150/1 shot at Kempton. 

She has taken her owner all over the country and won races on both Newmarket courses, Yarmouth, Wolverhampton and Newcastle. 

Unbelievably, Royal Velvet now shares the honour of being the winningmost progeny of Lightning Spear with Atlantic Gamble, a stablemate at the Knight yard – we are sure there’s a seventh win in both of them. 

Royal Velvet is just about the best of Lightning Spear’s progeny in the UK on Racing Post Ratings. Well done filly and those connected with her!
