Homebred Lion cubs get names

The Roaring Lion two-year-olds owned by Qatar Racing have been named and Racing Analyst and Bloodstock Assistant Adam Brookes discusses some of them.

Glories cost $1.2m as a foal and her first foal, a bay colt, has been named Glorious Lion and is in training with James Ferguson in Newmarket. Also with James are Lion Guard, a bay colt out of Stakes-placed Gertrude Versed, and Vitani who is a grey filly out of dual Gr.3 winner and Gr.1-placed Kiyoshi.

There are 10 Qatar Racing-owned Roaring Lions across Newmarket with John and Thady Gosden. The homebreds include Lion Tamer, a chestnut filly out of Exceedingly Rare; a bay colt out of dual Gr.3 winner and Gr.1-placed Weekeela named Maasai Mara; bay colt Middle Earth whose name is a nod to his mother Roheryn, named after the horse of Aragorn in Lord of The Rings; Common Knowledge’s dark grey daughter Queen Regent; and grey colt Savanna King who is a half-brother to Stakes performers Time Scale and Bletchley.

Sir Michael Stoute’s two Roaring Lions include Survival, a grey son of Gr.1 winner Treasure Beach’s close relation Honorina.

In Hampshire, Ralph Beckett will train Queen of The Pride, a filly out Simple Verse whom he trained to win the Gr.1 St Leger and Gr.1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes - she looks like her dam. Ralph also trained Diamonds Pour Moi to win a Listed race and has her bay daughter My Lion.

20 miles away is Andrew Balding’s Kingsclere yard, which houses two Qatar Racing homebred Roaring Lions. Light grey colt Saint George is, as his name implies, out of Stakes-placed Lady Dragon and almost black colt with a white stripe Thunder Cat is out of 2yo Gr.2 winner Rich Legacy.
