Tweenhills Horses To Follow 2024

With the Flat season about to really hit full swing, we asked our Racing Analyst Adam Brookes to discuss some of the leading prospect with ties to Tweenhills…

Running Lion was a star for her owner-breeder David Howden in 2023 – bar an unfortunate experience in the stalls when fancies for the Oaks – and she’s back in training with John and Thady Gosden.

Born, raised and grazed at Tweenhills, Running Lion made a winning return as a 3yo last year, before following up impressively in a Listed race at Newmarket, and she could reappear in either the Gr.2 Dahlia Stakes at the same track’s QIPCO Guineas meeting or the Gr.2 Middleton Stakes at York later in May.

David Howden teamed up with Qatar Racing to buy Sword as a yearling and that colt, a stablemate of Running Lion, could be a big improver this season after his promising debut in November. Sword caught the eye with how he stayed on at Kempton and the runner-up (Brioni) and sixth (Kamboo) both won next time.

British Camp was another born at Tweenhills, and the strapping son of Lope de Vega overcame greenness to make a winning debut at Kempton in March for Andrew Balding. He’s a half-brother to his former stable companion Saint George (now in Australia) and has Royal Ascot on his agenda, though which race is yet to be finalised and he’s likely to run again beforehand.

Kaleidoscope is out of Sheikh Fahad’s first Gr.1 winner, Lightening Pearl, and she managed something her mother didn’t do when winning on debut at Lingfield in December. Kaleidoscope is one of just 4 entries in the QIPCO 1,000 Guineas for the Gosdens and could be anything. We may well see her next in a Guineas trial.

And here’s an unraced one for you to keep an eye out for: Run Away, the full sister to dual Gr.1 winner in 2022, Blackbeard, now a Coolmore stallion. Run Away is another part-owned by Qatar Racing and David Howden, and Andrew Balding reports she's been pleasing at home ahead of a debut in the coming weeks.
