New Century, a first Gr.1 winner for Kameko

A first Gr.1 winner for Kameko

Tweenhills’ leading first-season sire Kameko sired his first Gr.1 winner when Qatar Racing homebred New Century won the Summer Stakes, Gr.1 at Woodbine on Saturday.

New Century has proved to be extremely progressive, having won the Stonehenge Stakes, Listed on his last start and was previously second in the Pat Eddery Stakes, Listed at Ascot.

Having dwelt out of the gates, jockey Oisin Murphy switched him out two furlongs out where New Century displayed his sire's turn of foot and tenacity to take the lead and win by a convincing1 1/4 lengths.  The mile contest was part of the 'win and you're in' series for the Breeders' Cup, so a run at Del Mar looks likely for the 2yo colt.

The win was particularly special with New Century being born, raised and grazed at Tweenhills for Qatar Racing. His owner Qatar Racing, trainer Andrew Balding and jockey Oisin Murphy were same connections of Kameko.

Kameko has got off to a fantastic start with 10 individual winners, inc. other Stakes performers Rajeko and Wimbledon Hawkeye.  The later being the highest rated horse by a First Season Sire in GB/IRE this year.
