Charm Spirit two-year-olds get names

Two-year-old sons and daughters of Tweenhills sire Charm Spirit (£8,500 Oct 1st SLF) are starting to be named and will be ready to go when racing resumes. Racing analyst Adam Brookes takes a look...

Despite what his name implies, Lockdown was given his moniker before Britain and most of the rest of the world was put under such regulations. And we know that because he was named from here at Tweenhills! He is owned by Qatar Racing having been bought as a yearling by David Redvers for 45,000gns.

Lockdown’s trainer Hugo Palmer says: "He's a strong type and has been doing everything right at home and he strikes me as a runner likely to be seen in June." It’s no surprise he should be ready to rock and roll when racing restarts as he’s a half-brother to Stakes-placed two-year-old Fuente, out of dual Listed-winning sprinter Bounty Box.

Another Qatar Racing-owned Charm Spirit who is bred to shift as a juvenile is Time Scale. She is out of An Ghalanta – and those who follow Tweenhills social media will know the mare produced a cracking colt by Roaring Lion in January – which means she’s a half-sister to Makfi mare Bletchley, who was agonisingly just touched off in the 2016 Gr.3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Ralph Beckett trained Bletchley for Qatar Racing before she went to America and he also trains Time Scale. Ralph describes her as "strong, masculine and sharp" while Qatar Racing's retained rider Oisin Murphy says "She's a beauty, one of the most forward ones of Ralph's. I really like her."

Another Charm Spirit two-year-old with Tweenhills links is Bright Apparition, a colt out of Turtle Bowl mare Katie’s Diamond who won a Listed race for Qatar Racing as a juvenile and was later sold by Tweenhills for 190,000gns at the 2017 Tattersalls December Mares Sale.

It was no shock that Katie’s Diamond’s trainer Karl Burke also signed for her first foal and we’ll be looking out for him on track this year, when he holds an entry in the Weatherbys Racing Bank £300,000 2-Y-O Stakes at Doncaster.

Another already-named Charm Spirit trained in the North is Cosmic Star with Les Eyre. She is out of the Mizzen Mast mare Reaching Ahead, dam of Listed winner Grey Britain and Gr.2 placed Full of Beauty, and is entered in the £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes at Newmarket.

Another we should be seeing out quickly after racing resumes – though it’s worth pointing out she doesn’t actually turn two until April 16 – is You’ve Charmed Me. She is trained by Archie Watson and holds an entry in the Weatherbys Super Sprint Stakes at Newbury.

What’s more, there were also Charm Spirit yearlings that sold for €130,000, €90,000, €72,000, €70,000 etc. last year that still haven’t officially been named, so there’s plenty to look forward to with his third crop of runners this year
