Flight (red cap) finishes second in the 1000 Guineas

06 May 2025

Huge Gr.1 runs from Tweenhills homebred 3yos

There were two big results for Tweenhills homebreds over the weekend as Flight finished runner-up in the Gr.1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and New Century was a fast-finishing third in the Gr.1 American Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs.

Flight had established herself as a very smart filly in 2024, but she took her form to a new level on her seasonal return as she beat all bar her old rival, unbeaten favourite Desert Flower, in the 1000 Guineas.

Despite starting at 28/1, Flight hit just over even-money during the race as she just about hit the front approaching the final 1f before being beaten a length at the line. It was a smooth ride from Oisin Murphy, as she tracked the well-backed Red Letter in a group of just 3 nearer the stands’ side, and a fantastic training performance from Ollie Sangster, who also trained third Simmering.

Flight runs in the light blue and red colours of her breeders, David Howden and Nick Wheeler’s Cornthrop Bloodstock Limited. Amazingly, Flight is the first homebred that has carried Cornthrop colours and she’s out of Run Wild, who made an impressive 3yo return at the Guineas meeting herself when winning the Listed Pretty Polly Stakes in 2020 for Tweenhills Fillies & Meridian Int.

Here's a name for your notebooks: Run Wild’s current 2yo, a filly by Night of Thunder called Light. She’s also in training with Ollie Sangster and shares distinct physical similarities with both her illustrious half-sister and their dam.

In the US, Qatar Racing’s New Century was an unlucky loser in the American Turf Stakes, flying late under Irad Ortiz Jr to finish behind Zulu Kingdom and Test Score on first start for Brendan Walsh

The son of Kameko – who like Flight, was born, raised and grazed at Tweenhills – had won the Gr.1 Summer Stakes in Canada in 2024 and can clearly win more races at the highest level in North America.

There were still winners for Tweenhills sire Kameko over the weekend though as 3yo filly Tsuki made a winning debut at Goodwood and Lightening Mann who the closing handicap on the 1000 Guineas card at Newmarket.
