Impressive 1-2 for Zoustar 2yos at York
Zoustar colts Zoulu Chief and Starlust finished an excellent first and second in the 16-runner Class 2 Sky Bet Nursery Handicap at York on Wednesday. Both look horses headed for Stakes races, joining Zoustar’s juvenile filly Miaharris who maintained her unbeaten record when winning a Listed race last week.
Zoulu Chief had already won a Newbury maiden and a Windsor nursery by a combined 9½ lengths and once again showed electric speed to make all at York under apprentice Gina Mangan.
Zoulu Chief raced under a penalty for his Windsor win just six days earlier and fully confirmed himself a horse going places in winning by 1½ lengths for trainer Heather Main and owners Llewelyn,Runeckles and Wetumpka Racing.
Zoulu Chief broke well, made the running with zest and looked in control at halfway. He essentially won unchallenged – though Starlust kept him honest in second with another improved effort himself. Zoulu Chief has earned another crack at something better after running in the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.
Zoulu Chief was bred by Wayne Clifford out of a mare by Helmet. He was sold by Byerley Stud as a foal for 22,000gns to Whatton Manor Stud, who sold him as a yearling to Heather Main for 27,000gns. What an absolute bargain!
Mrs Fitri Hay’s Starlust has already won twice himself this year and finished runner-up in two very competitive nurseries. Like Zoulu Chief, he has a Timeform Rating of 98.
Starlust was also well bought by Dermot Farrington as a yearling for 55,000gns. He was bred by Branton Court Stud Llp and consigned by Barton Stud. Starlust is out of a mare by Invincible Spirit.
