Kameko runner crowned Three-Year-Old of the Year

Kameko’s son War Socks, who competed at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood in 2025, was crowned Three-Year-Old of the Year at Norway’s annual Oscargalla Awards alongside UAE Oaks-winning filly Queen Azteca.

War Socks won both a Guineas Trial over 1m at Bro Park in Sweden last May and the Norsk Derby over 12f at Ovreroll in Norward last August, by a combined 5¾ lengths. In the latter, War Socks beat Icon Bling, who won a Listed race next time.

The flashy chesnut trained by Niels Petersen also ran three times at Meydan earlier in 2025, as well as a good run in a handicap at the track this month. He was ridden by Silvestre de Sousa at Royal Ascot and by William Buick at the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

War Socks was bred by Wayne Clifford at Byerley Stud out of Helmet mare Courteous Crown. The mare returned to Kameko in 2025.

He was a shrewd pinhook by Midland Equine as the 11,000gns he’d cost as a foal was turned into a €115,000 sales price as a yearling. He was bought at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale by Edgar Byrne to go to Scandinavia.

Kameko is also the sire of Gr.1 2yo winner New Century, Gr.2 2yo winner and winner of the very valuable Gr.3 Nashnille Derby, Wimbledon Hawkeye, and Stakes winners Five Ways and American Gal among others.

Kameko will have 2yos running the Joh  and Thady Gosden, Andrew Balding, Roger Varian, Richard Hughes, Jamie Osborne, David Menuisier etc in 2026.
