Second Group winner for King of Change

Coedana became the second Group winner by Tweenhills sire King of Change when landing the Princess Royal Stakes at Newmarket on Friday. 

Coedana had become King of Change’s fourth individual Stakes winner when taking the Listed Pontefract Castle Fillies’ Stakes in June. She then ran a cracker when beaten just over 2 lengths dropped back to 10f in the Gr.1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis at Munich in July.  

First and third in Germany were Hotazhell and Wimbledon Hawkeye, who would fight out the Gr.1 Irish Champion Stakes next time, and just ahead of Coedana was Santagada, who won a Gr.2 this month. 

Coedana returned from two months off in the 12f Princess Royal and came with a strong run under Connor Beasley to win by a ½-length from dual Classic-placed Inis Mor. 

It was an excellent training performance from Ed Bethell and there’s still time for Coedana win an even more prestigious race this year. This was just her 11^th start and she’s nearing the end of her 4yo year. 

She’ll also make a great addition to the broodmare band of her owners Julie and David R Martin and Dan Hall when the time comes. She was a superb purchase for €40,000 at the Goffs Orby Book 2 (Yearling) Sale, knocked down to Blandford Bloodstock’s Tom Biggs.

King of Change covered well over 100 mares in his first season as a Tweenhills stallion - having stood his first five breeding seasons in Ireland - and will be very popular again in 2027. His fee will be announced in due course.
