Zoustar debut 2yo winner has Gr.1 aim

January 8 saw another winning day for Zoustar’s progeny in Australia, including a debut juvenile scorer who has his sights set on a Gr.1 target.

Two-year-old Zoustar colt Philosopher made an impressive winning start over 1000m at Caulfield for trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman and jockey Damien Oliver.

Philosopher went to post as favourite and, after showing lots of natural speed, was just nudged out in the end to beat Godolphin entry Jewellery, a daughter of champion sire Lonhro.

Philosopher was bred by Widden Stud and sold by them for AU$800,000 to James Harron Bloodstock, in whose colours he runs. Philosopher races for a big syndicate of Harron’s clients with Widden also retaining an interest.

Sam Freedman told the press: He's a very fast colt, he's been very professional in everything he's done.

“That said, in his trials, he pricks his ears when he gets to the front and has a look around. He's not screwed down by any means, it's a long series to get to the Gr.1 Blue Diamond (Stakes), but that would be the goal and he'll certainly appreciate the experience.”

Philosopher is the first foal out of unraced Sepoy mare Lone, who has since revisited Zoustar. Philosopher was the second highest-priced yearling by Zoustar sold at Magic Millions last year; above him was Brereton, also sold by Widden and now winner of the Gr.3 VRC Maribyrnong Plate.

Another Zoustar winner on Saturday was Starman, with the 3-year-old gelding winning for the third time from six starts.

Starman won a 1200m handicap by over three lengths over the weekend and looks another young Zoustar sprinter going places fast. He is part-owned by Coolmore, Westerberg and Sir Peter Vela.

As Zoustar will be limited to 100 mares at Tweenhills this season, he will be oversubscribed again – so make sure you contact us now on +44 (0)1452 700177 if you would like to book a nomination for your mare.
