What's Werner's Beef?

Hi everyone,

It’s been a wonderful month since my last blog as we went to Reykjavik for my wife’s birthday and then there was Christmas – we even cooked a turkey on the braai!

Back on the farm, all calves are now weaned and with an average weight of 323kg.

As I mentioned in my last blog, cows were PD’d in December. With 93% of them in calf, we have 71 calving this spring. Our first cow is due to calve on January 20 - she was AI’d with Rawburn Boss Hogg N630. The rest of the herd will start calving in mid-February, so hopefully everything is ready for another successful season.

With over 500 sheep currently on the farm we are also on target to have all paddocks grazed and grass given the time to come back ready for the horses and cattle to be turned out in early-spring (if the weather allows!).

Every winter we plant new trees and lay hedges; this winter is no different. We have some more Oak trees to plant and, around the yard, Crabapple and Liquidambar (also known as Sweet Gum) trees.

Next time you hear from me we will be in the middle of calving and getting ready for our spring first applications.

Tot dan geniet die lekker weer!

Werner
