Another foaling season completed

So, another foaling season comes to a close at Tweenhills. Foaling Manager Sammy Griesel and her team have foaled over 90 mares and, though every foaling season has its up and downs, some of them extreme, overall it’s been a good season.

Sammy says:

“It’s been as challenging as ever but we’ve come away with many high-quality, strong foals by a range of stallions but obviously plenty by our own boys Zoustar, Havana Gold and Lightning Spear. I can’t wait to follow their futures and hopefully many successes.

“My mum Caroline and sister Geena helped with night watches, and it was great to have family around me.

“I also had half a dozen night watch girls on rotation and they were absolutely brilliant. Their intuition with spotting issues was a big help and they took great care with the young foals, especially those that needed extra attention.

“I shall be based more on the farm for the next few months – rather than at the Foaling Unit down the road – and will help out the main team with mucking out and general duties. I did some feeding last year so hopefully get to do that again.

“I’m looking forward to a lovely summer watching all the young foals go from strength to strength.

“Maybe it’s not fair to pick out favourites but I’ll definitely say Group 1 winner Molly Malone had a smashing colt foal by Dubawi.

“Also, we do love the 17-year-old mare Granny Franny; she has been barn favourite all year and – I’m not sure I should admit this – has been going through a packet of Polos a day!

“Before you know it it’ll be time to prepare for the next foaling season when we’ll be looking forward to foaling down all the mares in foal to Kameko. I really enjoy my job!”
