27 Roaring Lion colts in Derby

A big team of colts from the only crop left behind by world champion 3-year-old Roaring Lion have been entered in the Derby.

Qatar Racing has entered 24 colts by Roaring Lion in the 2023 Derby, many of which were born and raised at Tweenhills in Hartpury, where Roaring Lion himself stood his only breeding season in 2019.

Roaring Lion himself was a brave third in the Derby, beaten just two lengths despite not staying the trip.

His Derby entries include colts out of Gr.1 winners Giofra, Golden Lilac and Molly Malone and a half-brother to Gr.1 winner Subjectivist, bought for 450,000gns at the Tattersalls Book 1 Yearling Sale.

Nine of Qatar Racing’s entries are trained by John and Thady Gosden, including the aforementioned half-brother to the 2021 Gold Cup winner. James Ferguson has four of the Roaring Lion Derby entries, three of them owned by Qatar Racing.

The 3 Roaring Lions entered for different owners are trained by Ferguson, Andrew Balding and Tom Clover.

Roaring Lion has more 2023 Derby entries than Australia (19), Camelot (15), Dubawi (12), Frankel (10), Kingman (8), Sea The Moon (6), Almanzor and Wootton Bassett (both 4 each).

The only two stallions with more 2023 Derby entries than Roaring Lion are Galileo and Sea The Stars (both 30 each).

Including fillies, Qatar Racing will have 33 juveniles by Roaring Lion in training around the world in 2022.
