Deauville double sees Charm Spirit on 28 winners

Charm Spirit took his individual winners tally to 28 when siring a double at Deauville on Tuesday, including a British raider…

Charm Spirit – who is due to return to Tweenhills later this week after shuttling to Windsor Park Stud in New Zealand – added another two winners to his tally within an hour on Tuesday afternoon.

First to score was Harbour Spirit who is trained in Lambourn by Richard Hughes and was ridden by Pierre-Charles Boudot. Harbour Spirit had actually been to Deauville twice before, finishing placed both times, so his victory in this maiden was thoroughly deserved.

The reason for his French forays is that he’s French-bred, Charm Spirit having stood at Haras de Bonneval in 2016 and 2018. Harbour Spirit actually carries the colours of The Heffer Syndicate made famous by Harbour Watch, who stood as a stallion at Tweenhills from 2013 to 2017.

The second leg of the Charm Spirit double came courtesy of Olympe, who also scored in a maiden, for trainer Jean-Claude Rouget and jockey Christophe Soumillon. Olympe had also finished placed a couple of times before, including at this course.

He is owned by Haras Voltaire and was bred by Ecurie des Monceaux. Olympe is out of Giant’s Causeway mare Naissance Royale, while Harbour Spirit is out of Halling mare Save Me The Waltz.

Charm Spirit also had another winner on Monday when The Big Smoke recorded his second success from just four starts in France. He is out of Fasliyev mare Trip To The Moon.

Charm Spirit is now just one winner behind No Nay Never based in the Leading 1st Crop Sires in Europe 2018 based on winners and at least 3 individual winners clear of the rest. He is therefore the leading British-based first-season sire. His progeny have already earned over €500,000 in Europe.
